21 Designers for twenty-first century Britain

Tonight is the launch of 21 | Twenty One: 21 Designers for twenty-first century Britain, a new publication written by Gareth Williams which we recently designed for V&A Publishing – with a little help from brilliant furniture designer Martino Gamper, whose chest of drawers inspired the design of the front and back cover. The launch is being held in the V&A Reading Rooms in South Kensington, London, from 7pm.

The Art and Craft of Richard Woods

Last week, we were excited to receive the first copies back from the printers of the new book we designed for artist Richard Woods. The book is being celebrated tonight with a launch at the Established & Sons exhibition at Milan’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2012 - a venue at which Richard has previously exhibited his own furniture designs in recent years. Congratulations to everyone involved in the book - we wish we could be there to celebrate with you.

Visual Identity

Witte de With Center for Contemporary Arts

We’re very excited to be working on a new visual identity for the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Arts in Rotterdam at the moment. The project is ongoing, and we will have more to share over the coming months, but for now here is a little glimpse of the direction we’re working towards - an evolution of Witte de With’s existing cloudlike emblem…

Bauhaus: Art as Life

Part 3 – Typography / László Moholy-Nagy

“It must be clear communication in its most vivid form … A new typographic language must be created, combining elasticity, variety and a fresh approach to the materials of printing, a language whose logic depends on the appropriate application of the process of printing.”

Bauhaus: Art as Life

Part 2 – Wall colour

Architecture and interior design from the Bauhaus is often associated with white neutral colours– but this is far from the case. The wall painting workshop was key to furthering architectural ideas, taking inspiration from art movements like Expressionism and De Stijl, and developing further under the teachings of Johannes Itten, Oskar Schlemmer, Herbert Bayer, and Hinnerk Scheper. Taking the form of playful murals, and strong colour combinations that evoked a certain emotion, or reflected the use of the space.

Exhibition Design Talk

We’re currently working hard on the upcoming ‘Bauhaus: Art as Life’ exhibition for the Barbican which will open on the 3rd of May 2012. As a prelude to this we will be posting images highlighting various aspects of the famous German art school that have inspired, and influenced our approach. Beginning with looking at exhibition design from Walter Gropius, Laszlo Maholy-Nagy, and most notably Herbert Bayer, (and his theories on perspective).

Talk

Working with Galleries: Part II
Tuesday 24 January

This discussion focuses on the processes of negotiation between artist & curator / designer & client. Two professional ‘couples’ have been invited to make visible the conversation around the initiation, development & realisation of work; the practical concerns and conceptual repercussions. The artists Cullinan Richards talk with curator & writer Tom Morton while directors of the design agency A Practice for Everyday Life, Kirsty Carter & Emma Thomas, speak with curator, writer and gallerist Rob Tufnell.

This approach has lead to thoughtful and inspired designs, establishing their reputation for intelligent and innovative work.
The Art of the Conversation

We got involved in bit of design Chinese Whispers recently, creating an exhibition piece and poster for the Art of Conversation. All in all 20 studios, ten in Berlin and London took part. We made three spoken word pieces for the hold music on our phones, based on previous projects, with a live telephone in the exhibitions to listen to them and some lovely phone cord type for the poster.

Cruiser Typeface

We were asked by Anna Sartorius and Simone Vollenweider, two students from HGB Leipzig to contribute new characters to the the font Cruiser they had created. Based on the logo found on a poster from 1934, the typeface had a nautical feel to it. Our response was to add two ornamental glyphs, a ships funnel and the cleat from a dock.
